Should I Paint My Walls White?

Many people consider white as a “safe” colour when it comes to painting their home interior. This, however, is not the case. While white can transform one room into an absolute marvel; it can, alternatively, make a room appear horrible!

White, like all other colours, has a strong influence on the temperature, light reflectivity, style, maintenance and temperature of a room; therefore, you need to take time to consider if white is the right colour for a specific room.

Ask yourself the following questions about a room before you paint the walls white:

Is there enough natural light?

Without natural light, white can appear lifeless. Natural light is needed to make the white paint look vibrant.  You will also need to consider the orientation of the room to determine when the natural light shines inside. See more at houzz. 

Is artificial light needed?

Rooms that need artificial lighting during the day should not have white walls.

Is the area dark and cramped?

We’ve often heard that painting walls white will make a space seem brighter and bigger. This is not always the case. The illusion of space is normally based on a few other factors, one example being natural light.

Darker, cramped areas should not be painted white. Opt for warm, neutral colours to add energy to the room.

What direction does the natural light come from?

• All around light: white walls tend to work well in naturally bright rooms (the spaces that seem to always catch a lot of sunlight)
• South-facing room: South facing rooms can appear more gloomy and cold; therefore, warm colours are ideal. If you do decide to pain your walls white, consider using white that has a yellow base.
• North-facing room: As north-facing rooms receive more sunlight, such rooms suit both warm and cool colours; therefore, you can definitely choose white for a north-facing room.

Are their architectural flaws?

Stay clear of white if the room has architectural flaws or imperfections. White does not disguise such issues well at all.

What do you see when you look out the window?

The exterior of your house influences  the interior of your house. If you live by the beautiful Oceanside, you may want to consider white walls to enhance your interior; it can, alternatively, damping your interior if the weather there is “moody”.

Does white match other elements in your home?

If you have a lot of dull furniture, white may just cause your interior to seem too pale. White does go well with various materials. For a modern, spacious interior, consider pairing glass balustrades with white walls.
